I do hear difference between MP3 and High Res audio files, but in the end, it all depends on the initial source/ recordings. Once you start to compare standard CD's with High Res files, the difference is sometimes audible, but again, may be the source was different.

  • @alvarosundfeld
    @alvarosundfeld 2 дня назад

I’ve done a series of A/B/C tests, and confirmed I can sort of hear the difference. Still, the lossy files didn’t sound as bad as I was expecting them to do. My rule of thumb is to always go with lidless CD quality audio (16bit/44.1khz). That makes me sure that the format I am listening to has all the possible detail capable of being caught by the human ear.

Thankyou for your explanation. Also just to point out that even I am trusted with MacBooks not switching automatically like iPhone/iPad, I am using an app called Lossless Switcher on my MacBook which does the job for me, you can try it out.

The sampling rate and the corresponding high frequency limits they have, are a minor feature. A 24bit depth sampling at 192KHz is a far more accurate recreation of a true analog and even physical sound wave. Its about increasing the QUALITY of the sound capture and playback. Higher frequency is not really a concern for almost anyone/musician/engineer. Basically 24/192 recording and playback is going to sound far closer to a true representation or even an LP pressing. Its quite shocking how many comments here are buying into a completely useless argument and assumption. Its about sound quality. Plain & simple. And it makes me realize this guy has no idea what he's talking about and I can avoid his other videos. I have never once heard someone bring up the point of higher frequencies capture and playback when discussing HiRes audio for either live or recorded capture and definitely not in regard to playback. This guys argument would mean a highly compressed 64mb mp3 file would sound as good as a LP record or CD. One more time for the back: Its about sound quality 💯

Horrible tutorial. Better options: Hardware: Phone - Sony Xperia 1 (Edit: Xperia has expandable memory SD Card slot - essential for HiRes FLAC listening) Headphones - Sennhesier Momentum 3 (or most Sennhesier cans) DAC Dongle: Amazon has a plethora approx $10 Software: PowerAmp USB Audio Player Pro Both apps have a 10 Band EQ (Critical). UAPP supports Tidal and Quboz integration.

I had the opposite experience back in probably 2005... I swore that high quality MP3's were just as good as the CDs I was ripping from. Ripped the same song as 320 and as WAV because FLAC was not much of a thing yet. On my humble Boston Acoustics computer speakers, the WAV was far better and I could hear it. Then it happened again with Tidal. I didn't expect any real difference, but did the trial which was all MQA at the time and got addicted. Odd twist is that sometimes, I've actually preferred the *lower* quality audio because the max quality sounded *too good!*

Yes. We generally do buy physical copies on either cd or vinyl simply because we get excellent audio quality. We have invested in excellent hifi over the years as well as enjoy reading the notes and owning the hard copy. We do, however, use Spotify (free version) to sample/audition new music and bands before we trot off to Spillers in Cardiff to buy.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but if I connect some mainly thought to be wireless headphones, like the Sony WH1000XM4, via an USB Dongle with a DAC to my phone, but I keep them on to use the noise-cancelling, does that improve sound quality or since they're on they'll always use the built-in DAC?

I always buy a CD, may listen to the album on Amazon Music first, but if I like it I buy it. I also have some albums that have never appeared on a digital service. However I recently found one album that was never produced physically and when I tried to get a digital copy, I ran into adigital teritory issue (not the first time) and was not allowed to buy it - luckily I found another store that I could buy from!! I also go and photograph a lot of gigs including many grass roots ones. ENJOY THE MUSIC

So just so I understand, if I bought a capable external DAC to get the highest possible quality signal to my over ear headphones, my S24 Ultra would still resample the signal internally regardless? I use apple music so the UAPP app isn't a solution for me. I don't understand why it resamples if it's supposed to pass on the work to the external DAC. Very frustrating.

Hi. Great information. Have you an opinion about the MediaMonkey audio player? In addition have you ever heard of tracks jumping and why that happens? I had a mobile which kept jumping from one track to another, or stopping, or repeating a few seconds of music. The manufacturer was unable to help and I have not got to the bottom of why this happened. Needless to say, it made listening to (offline) music almost impossible.

I often listen to music with my ZX707 Walkman, and sometimes I wonder about the very good and comfortable sound quality of some tracks, so I look at the screen. In 90% of the cases it was a 24bit audio file. So I assume it's not because of 24bit, but music which gets sold in 24bit in dynamic range, seems often to have been mastered very well.😅😉

I'm 99% sure I can't hear the difference between lossless and good quality lossy. I buy CDs and CD quality downloads because, just like you, I like to have a bit perfect copy of the music. I also play that music lossless on my DAP and via my PC in FLAC format simply because I have the space for it now that storage is much cheaper. Also simply the fact of playing bit perfect FLAC files just makes me happy even if I can't hear the difference. I'm also content with just streaming lossy music from services Another benefit of having lossless audio files is that you can convert them to any existing or future lossy or lossles format. If I were to convert a lossy file to another lossy format, the new format will have less of the audio information to create a good file with. I'm not sure how much of a difference this makes in practice, but I'd rather convert to lossy from lossless file.

I’m 57 I love music of just about every style and always have. I have purchased thousands and thousands of dollars worth of music in every format. I’m done buying music. DONE. I travel the country to see artists live and support them by buying expensive tickets. I often get to meet artists. I love that. I am so happy I get to stream all the music I love. It’s easy; it’s accessible and I like the sound quality. I don’t think kids are missing out. They are having their own coming of age experiences with media they love and as an official old guy with grown kids I can tell you that’s okay. My kids go to amazing concerts and they make memories. They also stream music. Here’s the thing: if they wanted to listen to music like it was 1975 they could do it!! Most do not because they don’t want to do that.

I refuse to use streaming services as a full time thing. I buy everything on CD and FLAC (via Bandcamp) if possible. For stuff that doesn't have CD or FLAC available I'll settle for a Amazon music's MP3 which are higher bitrate and no DRM. I hate the idea of not actually owning the music that I like. Streaming may help for discovery (I use Deezer), but having stuff taken away because of someone else's whim is a non-starter for me.

I still buy physical media for all the reasons you talk about here. There is an additional one, which I don't believe you mentioned: privacy! Although I subscribe to Apple Music, there's a part of me that's uncomfortable that some corporate entity and algorithm knows what I'm streaming at any given time; knows my tastes and interests (therefore, knowing what and how to market to me); just generally knowing and keeping tabs on my listening behavior and patterns. This is the world that we find ourselves living in, and it is what it is. But I just like the fact that when I put on a record album or a CD, I am the only one who knows what I'm listening to.

I know remastering on cd is hated by audiophiles, but in the case of The Smiths back catalogue it was very much needed! On cd before the remastered editions came out, The Smiths sounded flat undynamic and very low in volume (no matter how much you turned it up on your stereo!) however, afterwards they sounded high in dynamics and had lots of “oomph” in the sound and felt stunning in general! It’s just a bit of a shame they inexplicably never kept the remastered versions out on cd, only on vinyl! Cd wise you can currently only buy the original master cd editions, which were available ever since warners got the rights to the catalogue in 1992?! Now why bother to remaster them and only keep them out on vinyl and not cd, when there is still a bit of a demand for the remastered ones on cd, because they sound better than the originals?! I don’t get it??

Folks these days complain about the price of concert tickets - I don't blame them - but one of the reasons we see this is because artists can't really support themselves off music sales because everyone wants to stream the music cheaply. Support your favorite artists by buying hard copies of their music!

Time to get tough with musicians! Musicians, here's your choice: Give up any chance at a real career in music to allow The Big Three Labels to continue to control the entire music industry... , or oppose them and give yourself and the musicians you say you love a chance at a career. So WHY were there so many great hits THEN but no one can get one NOW? Aren't the new musicians just no good? NO HERE IS THE REASON !!!!! Then there were hundreds of music labels competing for best song - and they were competing against separately owned media, and radio stations. NOW the Big 3 Labels (google it) control not only the entire music industry but through their parent companies and their clout, all radio and media. No wonder the reviews are so great but the music is so bad! Join the peaceful music revolution against these 3 labels.
